Brown Bag Wednesdays are the Truth!

Unless you’ve been living under a digital rock or don’t have a Facebook or Twitter account (gasp!), there’s a good chance you’ve stumbled on the e-flyer for Green Room’s new weekly hip hop Wednesday night called Brown Bag Wednesdays that debuts on February 8th. Brown Bag will be a night that pays homage to the underground hip hop community by showcasing some of the top national and local hip hop musicians, DJs, and artists. Scratch Academy founder DJ Immortal is the party’s official resident DJ. $3 Colt 45′s and $3 Gin & Juices.

We feel so confident and proud of our inaugural lineup, that I’m going to let the flyer speak for itself. Take a look the lineup, let it simmer for a bit, then call your mom, and tell her “Hey ma! GREEN ROOM just blew my mind!”.

Pocket Of Lollipops is to The Butchers, As [Blank] is to [Blank]

This Saturday, we’ve booked two bands that couldn’t have more opposite- sounding band names. One band name, Pocket Of Lollipops, evokes feelings of happiness, skipping through fields, gently caressing a baby alpaca; the other band name, The Butchers, stirs up images of bloodshed, cleavers, and fallen angels. Let me clarify, these descriptions don’t describe the each band’s music. Pocket Of Lollipops sound like a mix of the B52′s, The Fiery Furnaces, and The Dead Kennedys.  Despite the their  band name, The Butchers play a happy-go-lucky brand of piano rock that induces random shouts of “goodness gracious, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!”. That being said, I’ve conjured up some analogies with corresponding images that show opposites cohabiting in the same space.

We’ll start with the obvious, POCKET OF LOLLIPOPS is to THE BUTCHERS, as GIANT LOLLIPOPS are to FAMOUS SERIAL KILLERS.

…..as DANIA JAI ALAI is to CHARLES MANSON

and last but not least, ……..as LYRIKILL.COM is to EMILIO ESTEVEZ

EmilikillDotCom, best known for his hit single "I Love My Lambo"

Ok, so I totally butchered (no pun intended) SAT-style analogies as we know them, but you get the picture.

The Butchers and Pocket Of Lollipops perform on Saturday night (in that order).  Mig & Andie Sweetswirl. (event page) Doors at 10pm. 21+. No cover.

Media: Stream Tracks From Tonight’s Band, Modernage

modernage Media: Stream Tracks From Tonights Band, ModernageMiami’s own Modernage journeys accross county lines to play a rare Ft Lauderdale show tonight for the latest installment of Digital Love. In fact,  the indie rock quartet hasn’t played a show since Bardot, last April (read this great interview by Arielle on County Grind). In addition to unleashing 2 incredible EPs (Sirhan Sirhan and Receiver) laden with great tracks (stream some tracks below), this band has built quite an impressive resume in a relatively short period of time. Modernage has opened for a little band called Bloc Party, as well as The Stills, The Walkmen, Magnet, Elefant and Peter Hook. They’ve toured all over North America, including Mexico. Their videos have been gotten regular airplay nationally and throughout South America (check out Modernage’s interview with MTV). Even Toyota is a fan– the company hand selected their song “The Shore” for a popular Yaris ad campaign.

Googling “Modernage” alone isn’t super easy (damn you The Strokes, Modernage furniture, and everything else that clogs the search results). Thankfully Spotify makes it easier to stream music for free. We also want to help the cause. Stream some of our favorite tracks from the band below…

Modernage – Receiver

Modernage – The Shore

Modernage – Sirhan Sirhan

Modernage – Somewhere

BONUS TRACK for download: Modernage – Creatures (Ryan Evans Remix)

Modernage w/ The Guards Themselves perform tonight at Green Room. Mig and Sweetswirl. Doors at 10pm. No cover. Mention this blog post for a FREE drink before midnight.

Interview With Two Tattooists From Friday’s The Art Of Tattoo

tattoo front lores Interview With Two Tattooists From Fridays The Art Of TattooTo preview this Friday’s two-floor art exhibit that will be featuring artwork from some of South Florida’s top tattoo artists, we’ve decided to ask two tattooists (say that 5xs fast) from this weekend’s show a quartet of questions to get to know them better….

What’s the craziest tattoo you’ve ever done or seen?

Pooch (Altered State Tattoo, Lake Worth): I did my buddy’s whole back 4 days in a row, 7 hour sittings, huge full color biomech skull

Gwen Gersich (Formula Ink, Ft Lauderdale): Well I’m not sure about “crazy” but it sure was hilarious! A recently single friend was talking about having 3 women with him everywhere he went… after many crude adult jokes later. We tattooed 3 stick figure women faces on three fingers. One a brunette, a red head and blonde. There are still remnants of Bernadette, Sally and Brittney one his hand today! (Yes he named them)

Tell us about your favorite tattoo on your body?

Pooch: Huge black and grey skull on my stomach by Dennis Pase

Gwen: My absolute favorite is still in progress. Its an entire back piece of a Phoenix flying from flowers into the sky, which incorporates a moon already on my right shoulder. I started it a while back and the reasoning is very dear to my heart. After having a serious health scare that nearly took my life, to economic problems and beating cancer. It represents beating the odds and rising through everything. Many people have similar stories, Holden from Formula Ink nailed the look and what I was looking to accomplish. It always reminds me to live every day as if it’s your last and be happy in all that you do. I believe everyone should accomplish what makes them happiest. You just have to take the risk and do it.

If someone wanted you to tattoo DRAKE on their forehead, would you do it?

Pooch: Yeah but I would change it to DOUCHE! Just kidding I would never tattoo anyones face

Gwen: Does a car have square wheels?… I love my work and how I make an income…. but I do hold morals.

Describe the art that you’ll be showing this Friday?

Pooch: Welcome to the amusement park in my head!

Gwen: I will be featuring watercolor pieces. I don’t want to say traditional, as there a few styles incorporated into every piece of art I create. I work in many different mediums to create art…. from painting, photography and even dabbling in sculpture. Tattooing is one of my favorites (obviously) so being able to combine my passion of skin and ink with paint is a gift!

Both Pooch and Gwen are two of the many tattoo artists showing their artwork this Friday for The Art Of Tattoo art show (event page). Residents LinderSMASH and Kaos will be spinning, as well as guest DJ Klov. Doors are at 10pm. No cover. RSVP to miguel@jointherevolution.net for a FREE drink before midnight.

4 Music Videos by 4 Local Bands Playing This Weekend

Sure,  you’ve probably seen the new drug-induced Unknown Mortal Orchestra music video or the Yo Gabba Gabba-influenced Santigold vid– who hasn’t? Every blog and their mother has helped make those videos go viral this past week. Uncovering a good local music video is way more fun, in our opinion. To everyone’s defense, there’s not a ton of outlets to discover local music videos. We’re here to help:

First up, here’s an impressive video by Miami’s seasoned veterans Modernage. They’re headlining Digital Love this Thursday (event link).

The Guards Themselves will be opening Thursday night (11pm). Check out their live video of their song Bleubird.

Sophisticated punk rockers Pocket Of Lollipops recently released this homemade video for their song Posh Punk. They perform this Saturday (event link).

Here’s a DIY live video of The Butchers performing at Poor House. They also perform this Saturday.

Considering this blog was started 2 days after one of our biggest nights ever, the debut of County Grind Live Music Series w/ Afrobeta, I didn’t get a chance to post about all  showcasing musicians and artists from the weekend. Although you won’t be able to witness the incredible music lineup (Mothersky, Boxwood, The Astrea Corporation, This Heart Electric, Dino Felipe, Sumsun, and Afrobeta), you will get one more shot to check out the artwork.

This Saturday will be the LAST Saturday to see artwork by: Ian Witlen (Concert Photography), Monica McGivern (Concert Photography), Christina Mendenhall (Concert Photography), Chris Hill (Street Photography), Sean Murdock, (Photography/Mixed Media), Chuck Loose/Iron Forge Press (Screen Printing), and Kyle Hess (Painting/Mixed Media).

In addition to the artwork, we got sounds by local band Universal Citizens, Mig, Andie Sweetswirl, and DJ De Paz (on the balcony). The Reckless Dames will be performing throughout the night. No cover. Doors at 9pm. $2 PBRs all night.

Friday I’m In Love: The Cure Tribute Tonight

black friday green room the cure Friday Im In Love: The Cure Tribute TonightIndie DJs have a unspoken motto, “the cure for a dissolving dancefloor is a popular track by The Cure”. As much as we try to mix in some hot new tracks and remixes, sometimes people just want to hear some oldies. Well, to appease the new wave fanatic in all of us, we’ve thrown together an ambitious The Cure tribute night. The evening will consist of 3 bands and 1 local supergroup to perform 2 or 3 songs by the influential Sussex foursome. To reward our blog readers, here’s the lineup, set list, and set times (times are subject to “Miami” time, but we’ll try to stay on schedule):

  • Pictures Of You

Leading The Heroes (11:30-11:45)

It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, No….It’s Plains at Green Room

1 19 12 plains tourposter small1 Its A Bird, Its A Plane, No....Its Plains at Green RoomOnly 24 hours removed from coveted opening slot for Jacuzzi Boys and Sebadoh at Grand Central, one of Miami’s most promising bands Plains keeps the momentum going with an intimate performance tonight at Green Room. The polished-sounding foursome has been the talk of the town on some of our area’s best local blogs. Miami culture aficionado’s Beached Miami rated their song Judy as the #1 South Florida song for 2011 (and there were some really good local releases this year, let me tell ya). The now defunct, but totally relevant, City Link (R.I.P.) gave their self titled album a slot in their top 10 albums of the year. Former New Times’ music editor Reed Fischer went as far to say that their album was “one of the best indie rock efforts this year, full stop”. My opinion, these guys sound like an established indie band– the kind of indie rock band that you wouldn’t be shocked to see reviewed on a nationally recognized blog, see on a lineup in a supporting slot for Pitchfork Music Festival, or hear one their tracks in a primetime XMU time slot. About a year ago (?), I fell in love with their song Innovator. I still love that track, but now my favorite tracks are Judy and End Of The World. Stream the whole album on the right sidebar of this site.

The band performs at 11:30pm tonight. No cover. Free drink before midnight if you say you’ve read this post. Check out their music video for their song Black Feeling

Introducing Green Room’s New Website & Local Blog

The internet just became a better place. Green Room has officially launched it’s official website and accompanying local-centric blog.  We couldn’t be more excited about the one-two punch of GreenRoomLive.com and the blog. While the website will serve as an informational hub for everything Green Room related, the blog will dig even deeper to discuss and feature the local performers or artists that are participating in each week’s events. In general, the goal for both sites is to  let everyone know as much as possible about what happens at GR.

The Website

grwebsite Introducing Green Rooms New Website & Local Blog

There’s always a lot going on at Green Room each week, therefore we have a lot of info to pack into our website. On first glance, the Ninja Turtle color scheme and 5 columns might be overwhelming; however, if you start exploring the website, you’ll find some juicy morsels. I’ll fill you in on some of my favorite features (in no particular order).

1) Social Media Links

In our quest to sign up for every social media website, we provide you with a list of links that leads you to our most active social media accounts (sorry Myspace, you didn’t make the cut).

2) Booking Info

If your band wants to perform at Green Room, we ask that you read and understand our new booking guidelines before contacting us. We do a lot to feature and promote the performers at our venue; this is just to make sure that we’re on the same page so that we can create a successful event.

3) Video/Photo Gallery

4) Contacts

This is a massive list of Green Room/Revolution/America’s Backyard contacts. For anything Green Room-related, contact Ashlie or Miguel. If you’re in a band, please read #2 before contacting (BOOKING IS DONE ONLY BY EMAIL

5) Blog & Twitter Feeds

Just in case you don’t use an RSS reader or our follow us on Twitter, we provide a section to catch you up.

6) Streaming Local Music

Check out music by the bands that are playing/played Green Room.

7) Upcoming Events

Not only do we list them for you, but we give you links to the Facebook event pages.

We’ll be adding new features to the website over time, and we’re open to suggestions. Email us (see #4) with your praise or tips for the site. Both are appreciated.

The Blog

Apparently, you’ve found our new blog already. The main focus of this site is to highlight the performers and artists that have/will be performing at Green Room. In our eyes, it’ll be just another way to help expose some of the creative individuals that make up the local culture in South Florida. If you’re interested in guest blogging (no pay, just exposure), email miguel@jointherevolution.net

We’re planning on having fun with the website and blog. Again, suggestions are always appreciated.
