Top 3 YouTube Videos By ¡Mayday!, Performs Tonight at Brown Bag

2 things I learned today: how to write an upside exclamation point (alt+173) and that ¡Mayday! has a highly active YouTube channel– 82 videos to be exact.  But before I dive into my favorite videos, let it be known that local rap duo-turned-six-piece ¡Mayday! is a force to be reckoned with these days. Recently, the group got signed by Tech N9ne’s record label Strange Music and joined the midwest icon on a 70 city tour. They have collaborated with Lil Wayne, Cee Lo, Del The Funky Homosapien, Garcia, Ace Hood, David Banner, Devin The Dude, just to name a few. Their single “Watching Me” was featured on the video game NBA Street. And even though it sucked the last 3 seasons, they had a song on Entourage. Look, I could on and on, but their website bio does a pretty good job.  Just know that these guys are good, and rarely play north of the Dade-Broward county line.

Now, here are some of my favorite ¡Mayday! videos….

1) ¡Mayday! – Death March

They debuted this video last week. It’s so good that I unprovokedly posted this on Jay Z’s Facebook wall.

2) DJ Khaled talks highly of ¡Mayday!

Ok, I find DJ Khaled kind of annoying, but he is a big name and he loves ¡Mayday!. Here’s the proof.

3) ¡Mayday!’s ‘stuck on an island’ cd release footage

If this video doesn’t hype you up about tonight’s performance, I don’t know what will.

BONUS: ¡Mayday! Beer Pong Music Video

An older video by the group. I consider myself a fairly decent beer pong player. I think I could take them.

Stream & Download The Digital Love Mixtape

digital love cover Stream & Download The Digital Love MixtapeThanks to everyone who came out for Digital Love’s birthday party. It was great seeing so many familiar faces and meeting a slew of new people. As some of you that attended already know, the Digital Love mixtape CDs ran out quickly; however, if you weren’t able to nab a physical copy last Thursday or couldn’t attend for whatever reason, you’re in luck. For your streaming and downloading pleasure, we’ve digitized the CD and uploaded it on Mediafire for download. Although the beautiful album artwork (see above) does not transfer over to mp3s, all the local tunes are there. I hope you enjoy and continue to come out to Green Room to enjoy live local music.

Here’s to another fun year of Digital Love Thursdays!

Call To College Students: Green Room Is Looking For An Intern

Dirty Hands Call To College Students: Green Room Is Looking For An InternGoing into our second year as “new” Green Room, we have a renewed focus on maintaining and expanding the level of quality for all our nights, Wednesday through Saturday. That means more live entertainment, more art shows, more press, more marketing materials, more off-site events, more quirky events, and more workload to pass around. We’d like to extend to one lucky college student the opportunity to be part of the GR family and aid us in continuing to develop our venue. Here are some of the requirements:

  • You must be in college
  • You must have an overt interest in local art and music
  • You must be able to express your ideas without feeling shy or hesitant
  • You must be willing to engage with prospective customers
  • You must be willing to learn
  • You must have your own laptop
  • You must a car
  • You must be willing to go to Brew and pick up our coffees without complaining
  • You must be able to chug a 4Loko in under 20 seconds*
  • You must be willing to put on a giant animal costume and run around Himmarshee District
The internship will require 2 full days in the office, totaling 16-20 hours of work per week. The internship will be a combination of work that special project manager DJ Mig and our marketing director Ashlie just straight up don’t want to do (data entry, calendar submissions, street teaming, hanging artwork, press breaks, etc) and really fun and creative tasks such as planning our nights, acquiring entertainment, blogging, contacting Emilio Estevez, dabbling in social media marketing, working with artists and non-profits, scouting other events and venues, engaging with customers at off sites, coming up with new ways to expand our nights, etc.

Important to note, the internship is UNPAID. I repeat, this is an UNPAID INTERNSHIP. So unless you take interest in this kind of work, please don’t apply.

Green Room is a fun and collaborative place to work. While a portion of your job will be ‘bitch’ work, we will do our best to make the experience worthwhile for you and your resume.

If interested, please email miguel@jointherevolution.net . Include your name, phone number, and a paragraph as to why you think you’re a good candidate.

*The 4Loko chugging requirement was a joke, just in case that threw you off. FYI we like to joke at Green Room.

VNV Nation Guarantees Appearance At Tonight’s Black Friday

VNV Nation VNV Nation Guarantees Appearance At Tonights Black FridayEarly this morning, New Times Broward-Palm Beach posted their article on tonight’s VNV Nation show at Culture Room. Near the bottom of the post, Ronan Harris talks about how he loves socializing with fans, enjoys criticism, enjoys buying beers for his detractors, AND most importantly, how he guarantees that the band will show up tonight at Black Friday’s David Bowie Tribute. Here were Ronan’s exact words….

“They’ll have to put up a barricade to stop us from coming”

I know we’ve been touting ourselves as the after party ever since tonight’s party went live on the internet, but you never ACTUALLY know if the performer will show up. That is, unless the words come directly out of the artist’s mouth. It’s doubly cool that this influential electronic group is willing to chat it up with its fans. In a world of R Kelly VIP parties (too soon?) and ungrateful talk show hosts, it’s refreshing to see a down-to-earth band that wants to interact with its supporters, face to face.

Oh yeah, and if that wasn’t incentive enough, we have 2 bands with multiple singers covering one of the all time greatest musicians David Bowie.

The Debut Of Beach Day’s Unofficial Music Video (That We Made)

From the name of the band to their retro happy-go-lucky sound to their Instagram-y promo photos, local trio Beach Day is the epitome of beach crusin’ music. Trip Track Attack makes me want to buy an old school VW bug– convertible of course to transport all my beat-up long boards. Their newest song Walking On The Street makes me want to grab my gal (who’d be wearing a red and white polka dot bikini) and have a picnic by the jetties. Their catchy single Beach Day makes me want to celebrate Fort Lauderdale Spring Break, four decades ago. The latter was my inspiration for the unofficial music video that I decided to make for the band.

Obviously, getting live footage from a beach party in Fort Lauderdale from that long ago wasn’t feasible or suitable with my time constraints. So, I got to thinking…..when I was a kid, what did I think was the ultimate party? MTV’s The Grind, duh. Of course, footage from The Grind looked too ‘new’ for a Beach Day music video, so I put a filter on it (foreshadowing of a new Portlandia skit?). A few more edits, and wala– DJ Mig’s  directorial debut. Watch out Hype Williams.

Without further adieu, the never-seen-before unofficial music video for the song Beach Day by Beach Day, that not even the band has seen yet (hee hee)…

Beach Day opens (11pm) for Fevers this Saturday night at Green Room (event page), no cover, 21+, doors at 9pm. Mention this hilarious video for free vodka from 9-11

Digital Love’s Backstory, Co-Founder DJ Andie Sweetswirl Reminisces

Andie Sweetswirl Digital Loves Backstory, Co Founder DJ Andie Sweetswirl ReminiscesI can remember the first Digital Love meeting upstairs in Green Room like it was yesterday. We were discussing the logistics of starting a new, revolutionary indie dance party on Thursday nights. At the time, Green Room didn’t really have an identity. Little known fact to a lot of our current customer base, but Green Room has actually been around for 2 years. On the weekends, “old” Green Room used to host South Beach-esque events with very little turnout. It took some balls from the managing staff at Revolution/America’s Backyard/Green Room to decide to drastically change direction, and create a party that catered to the underdeveloped local live music and art scene. For all intensive purposes, that decision was the stepping stone for the rest of our weeklys and the “Best Cultural Turnaround of 2011″. Kudos to everyone who was part of that decision– our burgeoning art and music scene is forever grateful.

Like all weekly events, the party’s name was a major topic at the first meeting. A couple of potential names for the night were thrown around such as Fuse, Fast Forward, and Lights & Music; however, none of those names stood out like Digital Love. Those two words put together represented not only a kick ass Daft Punk song (and who doesn’t like Daft Punk), but it also symbolized a night of DJs (“Digital”) and a growing community of local music fans and music lovers (“Love”). The goals of DL were laid out that night as well– showcase great local acts and get people dancing (or at least swaying). That goal is more true than ever. Going into year #2, we plan on beefing up our Thursday nights: more guest DJs, more quality local acts, more bigger national acts with strong local openers, and more quirky nights.

We cannot thank everyone who has supported us enough. Green Room prides itself on being a collaborative venue that relies on input from ALL staff members and its loyal patrons. Without everyone’s support and contributions, Green Room would be just another relic in the annals of failed South Florida live music venues. Thank you, thank you, thank you.  We hope to see a lot of familiar and new faces tonight for our birthday party. The first 100 people will receive a free Digital Love compilation, complete with custom CD wallets with artwork from local artists.

One of the people at that inaugural meeting was resident DJ Andie Sweetswirl. I asked her few questions that touched on the past, the present, and the future of Digital Love.

What was your all-time favorite Digital Love memory?

The White Panda show. It was crazy packed and I loved seeing all the panda masks/ costumes!

If Digital Love was a movie, give me a song from the soundtrack?

I’d have to say Daft Punk’s “Digital Love” icon wink Digital Loves Backstory, Co Founder DJ Andie Sweetswirl Reminisces

What can everyone expect from Digital Love in year #2?

Digital Love Level 2! We have certainly had amazing bands play this year and we plan on booking most of them again. We’re also seeking out national known touring bands to perform as well.

I’m putting you on the spot. Green Room has a lot of loyal customers. Who was the most loyal Digital Love customer over the past year?

We have had so many friends come out and support us so often I’m not sure who to pick as the “most” loyal. I do believe Yoni is currently the [Foursquare] mayor and he is definitely supported us since the beginning. Also a few people I can think of that frequent DL are the Andys, my brother, Michael, Jason, and Bill. There are so many others who have continuously supported us and the indie community. You’re all fabulous!

Fevers Debut Their Explosive New Track ‘Dynamite Pond’

When we were putting together the Digital Love compilation, we tried to include most of the bands that have performed and supported us on Thursdays throughout the last year (a few of the omitted bands can be found on FTL Collective’s Digital Love mixtape back in April). A huge snub that we’re beating ourselves up about is the glaring omission of Fevers from the compilation. Not only has Fevers performed at 2 different Digital Loves (a title only held by a few select bands), their band members continually show up at Green Room to support the live music and art shows that we put together. That, and we’re big fans of their fast-paced, fuzzy brand of garage rock. Stream/download their songs Meth Lab and Glory Holes (the track that was supposed to be on the compilation) to see what I mean.

Thankfully, lead singer/guitarist Christian Humphries accepted our apology, totally brushed off our ditsy mistake, AND he sent me this juicy new track called Dynamite Pond to debut on our blog. THAT’s why we love Fevers!

Enjoy this brand new, never-been-heard-before track from Fevers and catch them this Saturday night at Green Room with Beach Day.

ArtOfficial Is Officially One-Of-A-Kind

It’s no easy task to follow-up the legend Talib Kweli who not only DJ’ed last Wednesdays, but also performed a handful of his hit songs. Luckily, we booked one of South Florida’s top hip hop collectives ArtOfficial for the second installment of Brown Bag Wednesday. Fusing elements of jazz and funk, this 5-piece thrives on originality, jivy melodies, and masterful lyrics. Their impressive resume includes opening slots for Wu Tang, KRS-One, Nas, NERD, and Pharoah Monch (Simon says ‘get to Green Room tomorrow night!’). ArtOfficial has won a Florida Grammy, released albums in Japan, and recorded with a 15-piece orchestra. I could go on and on, but I’ll let their hit single ‘Migraine’ do all the talking. The beat, the video, and the lyrics to this song are the urban dictionary definition of ‘on point’. Enjoy.

If you enjoyed that song, make sure to download their mixtape The Payback on their Bandcamp.

Brown Bag Wednesdays w/ ArtOfficial at Green Room (Facebook event page), $3 Colt 45s/ $3 Gin & Juices, doors at 10pm, 21+, no cover. See previous post on how to get a FREE Colt 45.

3 Ways To Receive A Free Colt 45 At Brown Bag Wednesday

In a uptopia, malt liquor tall boys would be free for everyone. Unfortunately, we have a business to run– I mean, who else is going to pay all the incredible acts we have lined up for Brown Bag Wednesdays? That doesn’t mean that we aren’t willing to negotiate or barter though. For instance, this week for BBW with ArtOfficial (and maybe next week too) you can bring back your Colt 45 koozie that you received last Wednesday to receive a 16oz-er.

Here are 3 items that you can bring to Green Room to receive a free colt 45.
