Before every other line in popular hip hop ended with -izzle, half the syllables in the most popular hip hop songs were broken up with an -iggity. We have Das EFX to thank for that, even if most don’t remember it was them, and not the backwards-clothes-wearing wankstas of Kris Kross, who were responsible for it.
Das EFX brings to Green Room this Wednesday a legacy which speaks volumes to just how many people were paying attention to Skoob and Dray in the early 90s when they were best known for the monster hook on Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self” and the verifiable classic “They Want EFX.”
From tracks like “Rap Scholar,” featuring Redman, “Buck-Buck,” “Generation EFX,” to the Beastie Boys-sampling “Kaught In Da Ark” and “Mic Checka,” the other huge track from the 1992 debut smash Dead Serious, Das EFX were at the top of the hip hop heap, bridging a gap from old school playfulness to the soon-to-come gangsta hardness around the corner.
It would be ideal with the duo ran through the hundreds of tracks that outright stole the Das EFX style, with the exception of a certain couple of young MCs who missed the bus cause they were too busy jumping (see what I did there?), but if they get through the killers on The Very Best of Das EFX, with “Buck-Buck” for good measure, at least one hip hop fan will be very satisfied.
Das EFX performs this Wednesday night, $10 at the door, Green Room: 109 SW 2nd Ave, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33312
